PIERRE, S.D. (9-16-26) — The South Dakota Attorney General’s Office and the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) mourn the death of Special Agent Quincy Kjerstad. He passed away Sept. 14 after suffering a medical event on Sept. 11 while on duty.
“Special Agent Quincy Kjerstad dedicated his life to serving this agency and protecting the people of South Dakota,” said Attorney General Marty Jackley. “Special Agent Kjerstad was a valued colleague, a devoted public servant, and a person whose courage and commitment left a lasting mark on everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him. Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, friends, and fellow agents during this difficult time.”
Quincy Kjerstad began his service at the Attorney General’s Office in June 2017. He was appointed an Assistant Attorney General and worked in both the Appellate and Civil Litigation Divisions.
Special Agent Kjerstad was appointed as a Special Agent with DCI in March 2023. He was recognized for his dedicated service to the West River Major Crimes Unit where he investigated major felony offenses spanning 13 counties in western South Dakota.
“Quincy was exactly the kind of person you want beside you in this profession,” said DCI Director Chad Mosteller. “He was composed, thoughtful, and steady, with an unwavering commitment to doing what was right. Quincy was a mentor, a trusted colleague, and someone who made those around him better. He leaves a lasting legacy in the people he mentored, the colleagues he supported, and the lives he touched. Agent Quincy Kjerstad will never be forgotten.”
Kjerstad is survived by his loving wife and three young children.
The visitation is Friday, Sept. 18 from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. MDT with a vigil at 7 p.m. The Burial Mass is Saturday, Sept. 19, at 10 a.m. All events will be held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 4500 Jackson Blvd, Rapid City 57702.
A full Law Enforcement honors tribute will take place following the Burial Mass. Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Rapid City.
