Pierre, S.D. (9-17-26) — The South Dakota Department of Education is pleased to congratulate Christina Berger as the 2027 Teacher of the Year (TOY). Earlier this evening, Secretary of Education Dr. Joseph Graves announced the official designation during the annual TOY Banquet in Fort Pierre, SD.
Berger is a third-grade elementary teacher for the Harrisburg School District. In her eight years of teaching at Liberty Elementary School, Berger has made an extraordinary impact in her classroom and within the community.
“Her influence reaches beyond her classroom,” said Liberty Elementary Principal Aaron Weaver. “She leads with heart, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to doing what’s best for kids.”
With over 20 years of experience teaching elementary education, Berger roots her teaching in meaningful relationships. Her passion for the teaching profession extends beyond supporting only her students. Berger serves as a liaison for her school’s Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) where she coordinates events and bridges communication between the PTO board and staff.
“Christina Berger has crafted her own legacy in the Harrisburg School District,” said Secretary Graves. “Her colleagues, students, and parents positively compliment her and her teaching style with a common takeaway of every child feeling seen, valued, and supported.”
As the South Dakota Teacher of the Year, Berger will amplify her voice as an educator and support the advancement of teaching and learning across the state.
“Our teachers have one of the most important jobs in our state: they build up the next generation of leaders,” said Governor Larry Rhoden. “Christina Berger represents the very best of South Dakota’s educators. I am proud to recognize her dedication and commitment to our students.”
The South Dakota Teacher of the Year Program is in partnership with the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO)’s National Teacher of the Year Program. Representing South Dakota, Berger will attend several in-person and virtual events including the National Teacher of the Year Program Orientation, Space Camp, Washington Week, and the Impact and Influence Virtual Conference.
“We are excited to help celebrate many of the great educators throughout the state,” Lottery Executive Director Norm Lingle said. “Since Lottery revenues support important causes such as K-12 education, this event is a natural and meaningful partnership for us.”
