Brookings (10-23-26) — The Brookings Area United Way’s Volunteer United program proudly recognizes Kasey Schmidt, Rena Berg, Shaylee Kuehl, Kelly Odegaard, Codi Smith, and RaeAnn Thompson as the October 2026 Volunteers of the Month.

Through their work with the ECSDR Good Neighbor Committee, these six volunteers have made a meaningful impact on the Brookings Backpack Project by dedicating their time, energy, and teamwork to the 6th Annual Bean Bags for Backpacks event. Their efforts helped raise $13,000 to support a program that provides weekly bags of food and snacks to children throughout the Brookings area, helping ensure they have nourishment over the weekends and can return to school ready to learn and succeed.

Through planning, collaboration, and a shared commitment to helping others, these volunteers have demonstrated the impact community members can make when they come together for a common goal. Their efforts have helped provide essential resources for local children and families while strengthening community support for those experiencing food insecurity.

“Their combined efforts are a wonderful example of the difference community members can make when they come together for a shared purpose,” said Cathy Ching, Brookings Backpack Project Executive Director. “Through their generosity and dedication, they have helped address food insecurity, expanded support for local children, and contributed to a stronger, more caring Brookings community.”

The Volunteers of the Month program celebrates individuals who give their time to strengthen the foundation of the Brookings area. To learn more about volunteer opportunities or to nominate a volunteer, visit https://brookingsunitedway.org/volunteer-united/.
