BROOKINGS (10-14-26) — Brookings Radio and the Brookings Beacon continue election 2026 coverage. Today we profile Brookings City Council candidate Lisa Hager.

Hager is a political science professor at SDSU. She was appointed to fill a vacant city council in April 2025 and is now seeking election to that seat.

She said responsible land use is a top priority for the city council… “What I see as a challenge for Brookings … is really land use moving forward. Because we are land-locked, and so we can’t just continue to creep outward as we’re developing Brookings — and we are poised to be become the third biggest city … and so in light of that, I think it’s really important that we work on neighborhood revitalization. When we have opportunities, maybe think about building up. So some of those town homes, condo options, even some of what we’ve seen at Branch Creek.”

She said she also wants to see continued public interaction with city government… “I respond to every text, email, phone call. You know if somebody comments on my social media. I respond to all of those. I want to make sure that our citizens are feeling heard and that their input is guiding our decision-making process”

Hager said her experience as both a political science professor and as a former congressional legislative assistant give her a unique insight on government… “I worked in congress for former Congressman Dan Lipinski on the House side, and so I’ve just seen and first-hand had experience in seeing the importance of serving your community at every different level. And so I just want to be given that chance to continue that work that I’ve started here in Brookings.”

Two, three-year city council seats are up for grabs.
