BROOKINGS (10-2-26) — A threat report at Camelot Intermediate School prompted a temporary shelter-in-place order Friday morning. Local authorities quickly determined there was no active danger to students or staff.

School officials and local law enforcement moved swiftly after the Brookings School District was alerted to a potential weapon threat.

According to Brookings School District Superintendent Summer Schultz, the district implemented a brief shelter-in-place protocol as a precautionary measure while law enforcement investigated the situation.

In a written statement to parents, Schultz wrote: “After a brief Shelter in Place, we confirmed the situation was not threatening and lifted the Shelter in Place.”

The Brookings Police Department collaborated with school personnel to investigate the situation. Police Chief Michael Drake said school resource officers quickly identified and located the student involved in the situation and determined there was no threat to students or staff.

“At this time the school is acting appropriately under proper protocol and guidelines to the reported information,” Drake said in a written press statement. “The situation is contained at this time and there is no immediate threat to the students, staff or community.”
