BROOKINGS COUNTY (9-9-26) — Three people are injured in a two-vehicle accident on Tuesday, September 8.
The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office said it happened shortly after 3 p.m. at the intersection of 468th Avenue and 212th Street, just west of Brookings.
Sheriff’s deputies say an SUV driven by 43-year old Jeffrey Steinmetz of Brookings approached the intersection from the north and collided with an eastbound SUV driven by 65-year old Melvin Mortinsen of Volga.
Steinmetz’s vehicle came to rest on its side and Mortinsen’s SUV rolled multiple times, ejecting him from the vehicle. Mortinsen was taken to Brookings Hospital and later transferred to a Sioux Falls hospital.
A passenger in Mortinsen’s vehicle — 64-year old Gladys Gillette of Volga — was extricated by fire crews and taken to Brookings Hospital. Steinmetz was evaluated at the scene by first responders and taken by private vehicle to Brookings Hospital for treatment.
The sheriff’s office says both vehicles received disabling damage and that Steinmetz was cited for failing to yield.
The Brookings Fire Department, Brookings Ambulance and Brookings County Emergency Management also responded to the scene. The accident remains under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
