Pipeline bill passes through Senate committee

A possible compromise bill on carbon pipelines makes it through a legislative committee.

One of the key components of SB 201 would curtail local input in the process process, particularly concerning setbacks. The Public Utilities Commission would preempt city and county governments on setbacks. It would also require that the pipe be buried four feet below the ground’s surface.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Casey Crabtree of Madison introduced the bill. He says the bill attempts to to balance respect for landowners and the pipeline developers’ need for certainty.

Opponents hammered the bill for removing local control.

The bill passed the Senate Commerce and Energy Committee passed the bill 7-2.
