SD Attorney General releases draft explanation for proposed single subject rule amendment
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has released a draft ballot explanation for a proposed constitutional amendment that would repeal the single subject rule.
It would remove the current limitation that a proposed constitutional amendment can include only one subject.
The public now has until the close of business on June 16th to provide written comment on the proposed explanation. The final explanation is due to the Secretary of State on June 26th.
The proposed amendment would require 35,017 valid petition signatures to qualify for the 2024 general election ballot.
The use of recreational marijuana in South Dakota, passed by voters in 2020, was overturned by the courts because if was found to have violated the single subject law.
