Signal lights at 5th Ave. and 5th St. intersection will be changed to 4-way stop signs

The stoplights at the intersection of 5th Avenue and 5th Street in Downtown Brookings will be removed and replaced with stop signs to create a four-way stop.
Starting Tuesday, Feb. 20, the stoplight signals will flash red until they are powered down on May 20. At that point, the four-way stop signs will take effect.
City Engineer Charlie Richter says traffic patterns have changed since the signals were installed several decades ago. He says traffic counts at the intersection no longer warrant the need for signal lights.
The City Council approved the change on a 7-0 vote in mid-November.
Richter reminds motorists to use caution as they grow accustomed to the change.
