HURON – The Brookings football team had a tough go of things on Friday afternoon as the Bobcats were shutout by Huron 20-0.
The Tigers pounded on the Bobcats, scoring 12 points before the Brookings offense saw the field.
Huron got the ball first and went on a methodical drive that took seven and a half minutes off the clock. It was capped off by a three-yard touchdown run from Anderson Porsich. The Tigers missed the extra point and led 7-0 with 4:28 to play in the first quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Tigers did a squib kick and a Bobcat player tried to dive on the ball. He was unable to fully fall on it and Huron recovered it at the Brookings 31 yard line.
Huron capitalized on the Bobcat turnover as Porisch scored again, this time from four yards out. Huron failed on the two-point conversion and had a 12-0 lead with 42 seconds left in the first quarter.
Brookings would move the ball into Huron territory but was then stopped on a fourth and two at the Tiger 44 yard line.
Huron used a 36-yard run from Ty Kleinsasser to move the ball into the red zone. However, the Tigers fumbled the ball at the one yard line and Wesley Mueller recovered it for the Bobcats.
Brookings was able to move into Huron territory once again but a false start penalty made it first and 15 at the Bobcat 47 yard line. Caden Walsh then got a handoff and lost the football and the Tigers pounded on it at their own 43 with 5:36 to go in the first half.
Huron would then drive inside the Bobcat five again but Brookings kept the Tigers off the board just before halftime. Porisch dropped back to snap from the eight with under 20 seconds left in the half and lofted one towards the end zone. It landed in the hands of Brookings’ Jude Meendering just over the goal line. The Bobcats then kneeled it out and it was 12-0 at the break.
That score remained until early in the fourth quarter. Porisch scored his third touchdown of the game as he moved his way to the end zone from seven yards out with 10:54 left in the game. Porisch then found Chase Shuchardt for the two-point conversion to push the lead to 20-0 and that was the final.
Brookings dropped to 0-3 on the season and the Tigers moved to 2-1. The Bobcats will play the No. 1 ranked team in Class 11A next week as they play at Sioux Falls Christian. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday at Bob Young Field.
